Seeing Double

I am in the market for a coffee table for my family room, so be prepared for several posts to come on the subject. Using two end tables in lieu of a traditional coffee table is a look that has always appealed to me.

Technically "triple" tables, but these metallic bamboo style tables are one of my favorite looks:

Other variations. . . double trunks:

Use two different tables for a more eclectic look:

I also like the idea of using multiple smaller tables as side tables and nightstands:

  1. Great inspiration pictures. I particularly like the double end table look as well and after viewing your pictures, I like the larger ones with more surface area - great if you have kids (to color or play games on)!

  2. I love the idea of double like tables. Right now I have a large ottoman serving as coffee table, as my toddler is way too active for me to trust him around sharp corners. I will love to see more of your coffee table saga, as in the future I will be looking for a replacement as well.

Also, I can't believe I hadn't seen your blog before. So glad I found you. If you have a minute, pls ck out my designer challenge. If you'd like to participate, please send me an email theshinypebble@gmail.com

  5. These photos are great for inspiration. I looked long and hard for a coffee tables and ended up with 2 leather storage ottoman cubes from Crate & Barrel. I highly recommend them - the tops flip so they can be ottoman or tables.

  6. Great inspiration pics! I have always loved the look of two end tables as opposed to a coffee table - I think it is more versatile. That collection of 3 bamboo tables is stunning.

  7. I like that idea a lot. It seems practical as well since they could be moved around or used as end tables in the future if your taste changes.

  10. This is one of my favorite looks! The double trunks is amazing, but you'd need a large space! I would like a new coffee table and am interested in something like in the Jonathan Adler living room... can't wait to see what you decide on!

  12. I am thinking I need to do this too, in my new living room. It is too small for a proper coffee table, and I just think it is going to look strange without it! Thanks for all of the inspiration

  13. I love tables in the first photo but I am worried about mirrored tables (fingerprints, etc.) Also love the idea of trunks as coffee tables.

  15. Great look but I can't help but being a practical mom and wondering how long it would be before the kids were dragging the tables across the room.

  16. This is a look I really love. Currently, we have a small-ish table and an ottoman together, sort of the same idea, but totally not working. I keep looking for the perfect large ottoman but then I see all of these awesome pics and I think...nope, I should be looking for two smaller tables. My house is never going to be complete...

  18. Its hard to make doubles work, but these are all great examples of how you can do so. I really like the double chairs in the first one!

  19. I love the idea, especially in a smaller space or when you entertain a lot (and therefore move furniture around regularly). Plus, I often find more small table I love than big ones (is that just me?!). Took me FOREVER to find a coffee table I was happy with -- best of luck, Emily!

  21. I love it, it's not completely out of the box and adds just the right amount of appeal. The mirrored side tables are my favorite. How beautiful are they?! Also the chest looking ones are awesome! There's just too much to love!
