A Garage Full of Faux Bamboo. . . .

It's no secret that I love Craigslist, and I'm also a big fan of faux bamboo furniture.  So, imagine my excitement when I found this sweet dresser (which may be turning into our new tv console) and mirror for $100:

(Thanks to Joi for first finding this piece on one of her weekly Craigslist searches.)

When I originally contacted the seller, I thought I was getting a pretty good deal.  Then, she informed me that I would also be picking up a faux bamboo nightstand, desk and hutch--all for the original $100.  (Lucky for me, she was desperate to get it out of her garage.  Now, it proudly sits in mine.)

The only surprise when we got it home were the white laminate tops that I didn't notice in the pictures.  My original thought was to just paint the pieces white and then you wouldn't really notice it.  After looking at it more, I'm not sure it really bothers me if I do decide leave it as is.

Although the dresser is the only piece I have a definite plan for at the moment, I'm considering my options for fun colors to paint the other pieces.

This cute nightstand makeover is courtesy of Kerrisdale Design.  She painted it black and then distressed it.

Although this picture is poor quality, I really like the bright yellow paint on this one.

  1. Love, love, love it all! You scored big time and I especially love the color of the yellow dresser you posted. I'm thinking the same color for my campaign dresser. Do you know if you can just paint over the laminate tops? Can't wait to see what you do with it all!!!!

  6. Oh such finds!! You are the craigslist queen...i swear! I actually don't mind the white tops? Especially on the desk. You could always pop them out and put in mirror. Or just wallpaper over them. How fun would that be?! And maybe even wallpaper the sides if there is an inset or pattern. Oooohhh. Have fun with this one!

  10. Wow! did you get a deal or what!

As for the tops, you could glue a smooth burlap over it, then paint and seal it. The paint takes what's left of the burlap and smooths it out so you could use the desk to write on (though I like lovely desk pads for that). It's a gorgeous look that dovetails with the bamboo look. I just saw a dresser done up that way (they said it was linen. they lied :-) for nearly $3K!

  11. Love it. I just passed on a bamboo bench and now I'm having major remorse. It was in need of paint and reupholstering but at $175, it was a steal. I've seen similar benches for $600+.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

  34. Hey girl! I wanted to tell you that the image with the red bamboo chair was designed by....well I forgot his name, but he was a speaker at SCAD Style seminar on Friday night. Girl, the seminar was about "the Rise of the Blog" and he did not like it (blogging) at all! He was selling his book ($50) after the event and Erika and I were flipping through it and I saw that image! I immediately thought of you and I badly wanted to say 'oh, my blog friend has this image on her site!". He would have flipped! It's funny how he do not like the idea of blogs, but yet if you would not have shown this image on your blog, his book really would not have mattered to me.

I know that was a lot, but I had to tell you! take care hun!

  40. i had the bright yellow dresser as a kid, actually the whole set with nightstand and bed with head and foot rails that felt like prison bars! when I got older I hated the color and had my mom paint it a creamy off white. its looked so good!
