My First Encounter with Chalkboard Paint

The blog world is full of great chalkboard projects, so I decided to take my turn at one by taking an old mirror and creating a little message center to hang in the hallway by the back door that we use the most.

I started with this antique mirror that had been sitting around since our move.  This mirror hung in my sister's room growing up and I somehow ended up with it when I moved into my first apartment.  It was originally light yellow but I decided to experiment with silver spray paint one day. . . (not so great). 

I used Valspar chalkboard paint from Lowe's and a sponge roller.  I thought the sponge brush would help in the corners but actually didn't work at all.

I used two coats:

Once the chalkboard paint dried, I taped it off and started spray painting the frame.  I used my favorite glossy white, Valspar Gloss (interior/exterior spray paint).

This was an easy project that could be easily copied by scouring the art/mirror section at Goodwill.  Just look for frames with fun shapes.

I've promised my 5-year-old that we can keep track of our March Madness brackets on the chalkboard for now :)
