Don't you love her roman shades?

She has beautiful taste and already has some great pieces, including this ottoman she recovered in a Robert Allen fabric.
She asked me to help her bring in more blue/grays and pops of orange to brighten the room, and to help select some new lighter, more streamlined upholstery pieces. This is what I came up with:

By pulling the sofa out in the middle of the room and adding an area rug, it creates a more intimate seating area and the rug gives the room much needed pattern and color. Further punches of color are brought in through the artwork on the wall under the staircase and through fun ruffle pillows.
I can't wait to see photos of the finished product!

For me, the room already looks nice but you made it even nicer with your furniture rearrangement. I had a similar situation before. Sure, our family room is complete with the basic room furniture like the couch and table, but since it was so large, it still looked bare. My wife and I both agreed to go to our trusted Fort Worth furniture store and we found interesting furnishings to add to our family room. We purchased a number of state of the art living room furniture Dallas, TX, and undoubtedly, it created a more intimate room for my family.
